Faith Insight 1: Beyond Belief — What Does It Mean to Have a Faith That Truly Lives?
“Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.”— Genesis 5:24 (ESV)
For many people, faith means believing certain things about God. We believe that God exists. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. We believe the truths taught in Scripture.
These truths matter deeply. But the Bible presents faith as something more than agreeing that certain things are true.
From the earliest pages of Scripture, we encounter a simple but profound description of a man named Enoch: “Enoch walked with God.”
That short statement gives us a beautiful picture of living faith.
To walk with someone implies relationship. It suggests companionship, trust, direction, and continuing together. Enoch did not merely believe in God. His life was lived with God.
This same pattern appears throughout Scripture.
Abraham trusted God enough to go where God called him. Moses learned to depend upon God's presence. David sought God in worship, failure, repentance, and hardship. The disciples heard Jesus say, “Follow me,” and discovered that faith meant entrusting their lives to Him.
Biblical faith, then, is not merely knowing about God. It is knowing Him, trusting Him, listening to Him, and learning to walk with Him.
That does not mean the walk is always easy. There are valleys as well as mountaintops. There are times when God's purposes seem clear and other times when we must trust Him without understanding what He is doing.
Yet genuine faith continues to walk.
This is the kind of faith we will explore together in these weekly teachings—a faith rooted in Scripture and lived out in an ongoing relationship with God.
FOR REFLECTION
Ask yourself today:
Is my faith primarily something I believe, or is it shaping the way I actually walk with God?
A SIMPLE PRAYER
Father, teach me what it means to walk with You. Help me not merely to know truths about You, but to know You more deeply. Give me faith to trust You, obedience to follow You, and grace to continue walking with You each day. In Jesus' name, amen.
