Faith Insight 6: “Follow Me”—The Call at the Center of Faith
“And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’”— Matthew 4:19 (ESV)
During the first five teachings in our Faith That Lives series, we have been asking a foundational question:
What does it mean to have a faith that truly lives?
We have seen that God makes Himself known. Faith comes by hearing His Word. Biblical faith involves knowing God personally. And that faith is meant to become a way of life.
Now we come to two words of Jesus that bring these truths together:
“Follow me.”
When Jesus began calling His disciples, He did not merely ask them to agree with certain ideas about Him. Matthew tells us that Jesus saw Peter and Andrew casting their nets into the sea. He said to them:
“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Matthew then records their response:
“Immediately they left their nets and followed him.”— Matthew 4:20 (ESV)
A few verses later, Jesus called James and John. They also left what they were doing and followed Him. There is something profoundly important in this picture.
Jesus called.
They responded.
And a journey began.
They did not yet understand everything about Jesus. They could not have explained everything that would happen during the years ahead. They did not know where following Him would ultimately lead.
But they knew enough to respond to the One who called them.
This pattern reaches back throughout Scripture.
God called Abraham, and Abraham went.
God called Moses, and Moses went to Egypt.
Jesus called His disciples, and they followed.
Living faith responds when God calls.
That is why Jesus later describes His relationship with His people this way:
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”— John 10:27 (ESV)
Notice again the movement:
They hear His voice.
He knows them.
They follow Him.
Following Jesus is therefore much more than admiring Jesus.
We can admire His compassion without following Him.
We can respect His teachings without obeying them.
We can know His words without allowing those words to redirect our lives.
But Jesus' invitation is personal:
“Follow me.”
Following means that someone else is leading.
That can be difficult because we naturally want to know where the road will take us. We would often prefer God to show us the entire journey before we take the first step.
But biblical faith rarely works that way.
The disciples did not receive a map of everything that would happen before they followed Christ.
They received a Person to follow.
That distinction lies near the heart of living faith.
Christian faith is not confidence that we know exactly what tomorrow will bring.
It is confidence in the One we are following into tomorrow.
Sometimes following Christ means doing something.
Sometimes it means stopping something.
Sometimes it means forgiving.
Sometimes it means waiting.
Sometimes it means speaking.
Sometimes it means remaining quiet.
Sometimes it simply means obeying what Christ has already made clear while trusting Him with everything we cannot yet see.
The essential question is not whether I can see the whole road.
The question is whether I trust the One who says:
“Follow me.”
FOR REFLECTION
What does following Jesus require of me today?
A PRACTICAL RESPONSE
Read Matthew 4:18–22 slowly this week.
Imagine yourself standing beside the Sea of Galilee and hearing Jesus say, “Follow me.”
Then ask:
“Is there an area of my life in which I already know what Christ has taught, but I have hesitated to follow?”
Identify one concrete step of obedience you can take.
A SIMPLE PRAYER
Lord Jesus, teach me what it means to follow You. Give me ears to hear Your voice, a heart willing to trust You, and courage to obey even when I cannot see the whole road ahead. Lead me, and teach me to walk faithfully with You. Amen.
